About:

Nora Benavidez serves as Senior Counsel and Director of Digital Justice and Civil Rights at Free Press, where she works at the intersection of law, tech, and democracy, elevating interdisciplinary solutions to complex threats facing our society. She is also a board member and Legislative Co-Chair of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation.

Previously, Venavidez was the director of PEN America’s U.S. Free Expression Programs, where she guided the organization’s national advocacy agenda on First Amendment and free expression issues. She managed PEN America’s media literacy and disinformation defense program, which works with communities and newsrooms to equip online users with tools to better combat the spread of disinformation. Benavidez is a lawyer by training, and prior to joining PEN America, she worked in private practice and at the ACLU of Georgia as a civil and human rights litigator. She has litigated significant cases representing victims of voting rights violations, unconstitutional police practices, and other First Amendment infringements. She has partnered with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Election Protection to provide emergency litigation support every election cycle.
